In a recent statement reported by This Day newspaper on March 24, the Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ganduje, voiced his belief that the Igbo community has the potential to overcome marginalization and achieve political empowerment by aligning with the ruling party.
Speaking at Ifeanyi Ubah's empowerment rally in Nnewi, Anambra State, Mr. Ganduje highlighted the historical context, recalling a time when the Igbo community came close to seeing one of their own ascend to the presidency.
He referenced the nearly successful bid of Alex Ekwueme, who served as Vice President to Shehu Shagari in the 1980s, before the intervention of the military disrupted the democratic process.
Ganduje remarked, "You know when your brother, Alex Ekwueme was the vice president to our brother, Shehu Shagari. The body language was there, and if not that the military struck, your son, Alex Ekwueme would have become the president."
Expanding on his perspective, the APC chairman emphasized that joining the ruling party could potentially empower the Igbo community to end marginalization and attain political freedom.
Since Nigeria's transition to democracy in 1999, the South-East region, predominantly inhabited by the Igbo people, has yet to see one of their own elected as president. Despite being one of the major ethnic groups in the country, the Igbo have not yet held the highest political office in Nigeria.
